You probably have done a Whois lookup on a domain. Most registrar’s provide a web-based Whois lookup facility or you can use a public service such as whois.sc.
Whois lookups can also be done with command line or graphical tools in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux/Unix.
The Whois databases are maintained by the registries which manage each top-level domain and provide a
simple way to query the entire registration records of any second-level domain. For instance, a whois
query for communitymx.com returns:
Whois Server Version 1.3
Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.
